Comparison between the SPD and the SPDS methods for segregating generation advancement in soybean BABT
Destro,Deonisio; Bizeti,Henrique Stoco; Garcia,Leandro Anderlin; Fonseca,Inês Cristina de Batista; Montalván,Ricardo; Miglioranza,Édison.
The purpose of this work was to compare the SPD (Single Pod Descent) and SPDS (Single Pod Descent with Selection) methods for segregating generation advancement in soybean breeding. Sixteen populations derived from crosses among Japanese and adapted Brazilian soybean were used. The traits, number of days to flowering (NDF) and to maturity (NDM), plant height at flowering (PHF) and at maturity (PHM), and individual plant yield (IPY) were assessed. The populations obtained by SPDS showed values close to the variation in the populations obtained by SPD. Regression through the origin showed that both methods were equivalent for NDM in the F3 generation and for NDF in the F4 generation. For all other trait/generation combinations, SPDS yielded superior means....

Crossing rate and distance in upland rice Bragantia
Silva,Edson Ferreira da; Silva,Lucielio Manoel da; Montalván,Ricardo.
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is an autogamous species that shows natural crossing rates of up to 3%, where the variations are influenced by genotypes and environments. The present work aimed to evaluate the rates and distances of natural crossing between the upland rice cultivars Guarani and IAC 201. The study was done in the counties of Carpina and Recife, in the State of Pernambuco during the agricultural years of 2001 and 2002, respectively. The Guarani cultivar presents leaf pilosity conditioned by the dominant alleles HLHL and this character was used as a morphologic tracer. On the other hand, the IAC 201 cultivar does not show pilosity because it carries the recessive alleles (hlhl). The experiments were composed of four blocks, constituting of ten...

Effect of gamma-radiation and sodium azide on quantitative characters in rice (Oryza sativa L.) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Montalván,Ricardo; Ando,Akihiko.
Seeds of rice cultivar IAC-1246 received single and combined treatments of 10 or 20 Krad gamma-rays and 0.5 mM sodium azide (SA). The experiments were carried out to assess the effect of treatments on the mean and variance in second generation plants of the following quantitative traits: number of days to flowering (NDF), culm length (CL) and tiller number (TN). In general, the mutagenic treatments increased variance, but did not change the mean for the characters NDF and CL in the M2 generation. There was no increase in the mean or variance of TN. The combined treatments of gamma-rays and SA resulted in larger variance in CL than for the treatments with gamma-rays alone, but not higher than obtained with SA alone. Combined treatments with gamma-rays and...

Performance of food-type soybean genotypes and their possibility for adaptation to Brazilian latitudes PAB
Guerra,Edson Perez; Destro,Deonisio; Miranda,Lilian Azevedo; Montalván,Ricardo.
This work was conducted at the Universidade Estadual de Londrina (UEL), in Londrina, State of Paraná, Brazil, with the goal to study food-type soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) genotypes performance for use in cultivation or crosses. A total of 104 genotypes were analyzed: 88 were food-type with large seeds, eight were food-type with small seeds, and eight-grain types adapted cultivars. The experimental plan was in randomized complete block design with four replications, and 12 traits of agronomic importance were considered. Genetic diversity was observed in the food-type germplasm. There were some genotypes with high yield adapted to a normal period of sowing. Soybean genetic improvement programs for direct human consumption in Brazil, either by means of...

Relationships among oil content, protein content and seed size in soybeans BABT
Marega Filho,Mario; Destro,Deonisio; Miranda,Lilian Azevedo; Spinosa,Wilma Aparecida; Carrão-Panizzi,Mercedes Concórdia; Montalván,Ricardo.
During 1995/96 and 1996/97, experiments were carried out at Londrina State University, aiming at quantifying the oil and protein contents in two groups of soybean genotypes; estimating the phenotypic, genotypic and environmental correlations existent among oil, protein content and seed size, and identifying genotypes for direct human consumption with high protein content. The evaluated characters were Weight of a Hundred Seeds (WHS), expressed in grams/100 seeds, Oil Content (OC) and Protein Content (PC), expressed in %. In the experiment carried out in the field, OC ranged from 12 to 20.37 % and PC from 35.66 to 41.75% while in the experiment carried out in the greenhouse OC ranged from 12.26 to 21.79 % and PC from 32.95 to 41.56 % . The correlations...

Strains of Lentinula edodes suppress growth of phytopathogenic fungi and inhibit Alagoas serotype of vesicular stomatitis virus BJM
Sasaki,Selma H.; Linhares,Rosa E.C.; Nozawa,Carlos M.; Montalván,Ricardo; Paccola-Meirelles,Luzia D..
Four Lentinula edodes strains (Le10, 46, K2, Assai) were assessed for their antagonistic effect on four filamentous fungus species of agricultural importance (Helminthosporium euphorbiae, Helminthosporium sp, Fusarium solani and Phomopsis sojae) and on Alagoas serotype of Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSA). The L. edodes strains studied had variable effects on the filamentous fungi and on VSA. The K2 and Le10 strains were antagonistic on the fungi assessed and the 46 and K2 strains were efficient on the Vesicular Stomatitis Virus. The results widened the list of beneficial effects of L. edodes on the control and prevention of animal pathogenic virus and filamentous fungi.

Use of seed protein polymorphism for discrimination of improvement level and geographic origin of upland rice cultivars Genet. Mol. Biol.
Montalván,Ricardo; Ando,Akihiko; Echeverrigaray,Sérgio.
Grain proteins from 58 Brazilian and nine Japanese upland rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L.) were electrophoretically separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Densitometric scanning of the electrophoretic profiles permitted the estimation of the relative concentration of 16 protein fractions, which were used as variables for the calculation of Fisher's canonical discriminating functions. Significant differences between mean values of protein fractions were useful in distinguishing Brazilian and Japanese cultivars, as well as improved and non-improved Brazilian rice cultivars in scattered plots. Electrophoretically detectable protein polymorphism in rice grain can indicate geographic origin as well as breeding...
